Northern Stars brings to life the conditions of child workers and the struggle for ‘one man, one vote’ in Manchester, Nottingham and London during the 19th century. The book tells the story of a Chartist march from Todmorden to London in 1839, seen through the eyes of two children aged ten and twelve. The children join a mass meeting on Todmorden market addressed by Feargus O’Connor, the charismatic leader of the Chartist movement and publisher of the Northern Star newspaper.
Featuring Corista, a vocal ensemble from the Upper Calder Valley, who will perform Chartist songs.
