Festival Patron and Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University Andrew McMillan is joined by two of our most exciting and well-respected writers, and his MMU colleagues, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi and Sarah Butler.

Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi is a Ugandan novelist and short story writer. Her first novel Kintu won the Kwani? Manuscript Project 2013. Her collection of short stories Manchester Happened was published in May. Her second novel The Women will be released in 2020. She was awarded the 2018 Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction.

Sarah Butler has two novels Ten Things I’ve Learnt About Love and Before The Fire published by Picador in the UK and with 14 international publishers. Her third novel Jack and Bet will be published in 2020. Sarah’s work explores ideas of home, belonging, identity, family, and urban landscapes. In 2007, Sarah established the literature consultancy UrbanWords, through which she explores the relationship between writing and place through prose, poetry and participatory projects.
